Frontline Sales and Camp/Climb Associate

Jun 2022 — Aug 2022 · Irvine, CA

Advised customers on outdoor gear selection using firsthand climbing and camping experience, while managing returns and customer-service escalations.

Overview

Frontline sales and camp/climb associate, advising customers on gear selection across climbing, camping, and outdoor categories. Used personal climbing and camping experience to recommend products that fit specific use cases rather than pushing whatever was on the shelf.

What I did

  • Product guidance — helped customers select climbing and camping gear based on their actual experience level, intended use, and budget — recommending less expensive options when they were better suited, and upselling only when it was justified
  • Specialty category expertise — served as a camp and climb specialist, handling technical questions about harnesses, ropes, protection, and camping systems
  • Customer service — handled returns, exchanges, and dissatisfied customers, learning to defuse tense conversations by listening first and solving the actual problem rather than defending policy
  • Frontline operations — restocked, ran register, and supported the sales floor during peak weekend hours

What I learned

How to have a real conversation with someone who’s frustrated — a return, a broken piece of gear, an expectation that wasn’t met — without becoming defensive or defaulting to policy. Listening first, asking what outcome would actually solve their problem, and then working within what’s possible usually gets further than arguing. It’s the same skill as explaining a technical trade-off to a stakeholder who disagrees: figure out what they actually need before deciding what to say.
